    Emergency Steps

    1

    Approach cautiously. Alert oncoming traffic.

    • If you cannot keep traffic stopped, try to take your dog to the side of the road before examining her.

    2

Always put a muzzle on your dog. Even the nicest, most gentle animal will bite if in pain or scared.

    3

If your dog appears to have a spinal injury, place her on a flat board for transport.

    4

Check the dog’s ABCs and provide CPR if needed.

    5

Take your dog to the vet immediately. Even a severely injured dog will get up and run away from an accident.

    • Internal injuries caused by trauma may not show up for 12-72 hours, so your dog needs to be seen by a vet.

    Dog Car Accident FAQs

What if I do not have a flat board to move the dog?

You can also use a blanket or shirt. Slide your dog onto it and have one or two people to hold it on each side as stiffly as possible.

What information should I have for the vet?

If you witness the accident, note where on the body your dog was hit, if your dog was hit, driven over, or thrown. Note blood, urine, or feces. Did your dog walk or is he limping?
